A youthful Shanklin side overcame Binstead by the best of 7 goals despite finishing the game with 10 men on Saturday (16th March). The result could be considered ‘surprising’ as only the previous Saturday, Binstead had trounced Shanklin 1-5 at the County Ground. The scorers for Shanklin were Jason Smythers, Fraser Lloyd and Cory Sanderson with a further own goal. Cian McGee bagged a brace for Binstead (and hit the crossbar) with Harrison Taylor also on target for the home side. Dean Stuber was red carded for Shanklin. Full time: Binstead & COB 3-4 Shanklin Binstead & COB: T. McInnes, Grandvionet, Dyer, Powell, S. After the game, Shanklin manager Ian Bennett told Island Echo:
“It was a very good win yesterday against Binstead on the hill. It’s a difficult game up there on that pitch with the way Binstead play it. “Very happy to win with a young and up and coming side with 6 of them 20 and under. But I was not very happy about the red card. “However, it was a really good response to score with 10 men and go on to win the game. “It would help if we can cut the small mistakes out which will improve us but that will come with experience and time.”
Binstead said (via Facebook):
“The best team won. We were not at the races today. Good luck to Shanklin in the next round.”
Cowes and Newport have already reached the Gold Cup semi finals. The 4th semi finalist will be the winner of the game between East Cowes Vics and Brading Town, to be played at Beatrice Avenue on 26th March.
