To celebrate Breakfast Week, West Wight Sports and Community Centre will be hosting a special free event on Saturday 30th January from 09:00.
The highlight of the event will be a West Wight Primary School 5-aside Football competition. Each boy and girl taking part will receive a free breakfast bap made from locally produced Isle of Wight food.
Sponsored by the NFU, it’s the fifth year the Centre has taken part in the nationwide event, aimed at celebrating the range and wealth of local food and highlighting the importance of a healthy breakfast.
Ingredients for the farmhouse breakfast baps, which will also be available to buy from our cafe, are being supplied by Briddlesford Lodge Farm shop.
For those not involved in the football there will be the chance to see where chickens come from with a chicken (real chickens!) show taking place, get up close and personal with some pigs from Watchingwell Pigs, look around farm machinery from Kings Manor Farm, and the opportunity to buy local produce from Brighstone Stores who will be having farm shop in our cafe during the morning.
Isle of Wight NFU chair Caroline Knox says:
“Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, providing energy for the tasks ahead, improving concentration and reducing stress. This Breakfast Week event will help people, and particularly youngsters, to understand the importance of eating breakfast as part of a healthy diet and active lifestyle. Local food producers will also be encouraging consumers to beat breakfast boredom and choose some of the Island’s finest breakfast products to start their day!”
Almost half of us (45% of people) admit that they skip breakfast at least once a week which can result in low energy, feeling grumpy and struggling to concentrate.
The event also launches the build up to this years’ Royal Isle of Wight County Show on 26th June at County Showground, Northwood.
During the morning there will also be a rowing machine challenge with the Yarmouth Gig Rowing Club. Compete against your friends and see who can row the furthest in 4 minutes.
