The Royal London Yacht Club will be welcoming one of the UK’s greatest singer-songwriters Chris Wood back to the Island for an intimate evening of sublime music next week.
Organised by Medina Bookshop, the event was originally scheduled to take place in the shop but as tickets quickly sold out, The Royal London Yacht Club have come to the rescue with the offer of a bigger venue.
On his first tour in several years, Chris Wood has been packing out venues across the country, testament to his popularity and the incredibly high regard with which he is held. Having started his musical life as a choirboy, Chris brought much of this classical knowledge with him as he became known in the folk music community as a fine fiddle and viola player, as well as a tasteful and accomplished guitarist and singer.
His early involvement with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre was followed by many collaborative projects with some of the greats of the folk world such as Martin Carthy, Andy Cutting, Billy Bragg and the Oyster Band.
His more recent solo projects have concentrated on his wonderful songwriting. In 2006 he won Best Original Song at the BBC Folk Awards for his song “One in a Million,” a warm parable about love in a fish-and-chip shop written with storyteller Hugh Lupton. The song ended up having an unexpected link with the Island when the apocryphal story of a lost engagement ring that was later found in the stomach of a fish turned out to have had some basis in a story reported in the County Press.
Attendees can expect to find Chris in fine form with just a semi acoustic guitar to accompany his very fine english voice.
