Just the Place – an exhibition celebrating 3 years of Boojum&Snark’s cultural and creative projects – puts the spotlight on Sandown at Quay Arts.
Between 2019 and 2022 Boojum&Snark have worked with creative practitioners and the local community on innovative art projects to discover new perspectives and stories from the Bay area. Whether it’s stimulating discussions about abandoned hotels or marvelling at the natural beauty of the Bay area, it’s Sandown that is at the heart of all these projects, that together fuse to form a collective narrative.
With support from Arts Council England, Boojum&Snark have commissioned a range of artists to create new artwork that considers and delves into Sandown. This exhibition brings that diverse artwork together into one showcase.
Boojum&Snark have bought activities, projects, and experiences to Sandown that arouse curiosity and inspire interest and love for the town. This exploration involves delving into the hidden past or shining a light on everyday beauty.
‘Just the Place’ presents outcomes from six distinct projects and commissions led by eight artists with participation from members of the public of all ages. The artwork has previously been exhibited on the walls and in the windows of Boojum & Snark over the past three years. ‘Just the Place’ offers the opportunity to see all the commissions together for the first time in one exhibition and as a whole body of work.
The creative practitioners whose work is featured in the exhibition are: Teresa Grimaldi, Sarah Vardy, Lauren Fry, Sapphire Goss, Claire Speight, Maggie Sawkins, Enzo and Kathy Williams.
Tracy Mikich – co-founder of Boojum&Snark – has said:
“Just the Place is really a celebration of Sandown, the community, creative practitioners, supporters and participants who have helped to conjure unique cultural content that weaves threads of Sandown into the present. Too often Sandown falls in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons but our projects highlight what a truly unique and inspiring place it really is.”
‘Just the Place’ will be exhibited at Quay Arts from Saturday 11th February to Saturday 8th April. The gallery is open from 09:00 to 17:00 daily. Entry is free of charge.
There will be an Exhibition Happening on Saturday 25th March from 14:00 to 16:00.

‘The Turner Prize’……win win for everyone.
Their Arts Council funded bar and neighbouring ‘shop’ are an embarrassment to Sandown.
We have worked so very hard over 3 years, I am truly sorry you feel that way. Our visitor ratings are consistently very good and we have had the privilege to create and support cultural activities in Sandown. Anyway, nevermind
