With the Bank Holiday weekend over and done with, attention turns to Ryde’s carnival celebrations with a week full of fun and entertainment lined up for all.
Events get underway at 10:00 today (Tuesday) at Ryde Library when Mayor Henry Adams hands over key to the town to the Senior Ryde Carnival Queen. The library is also hosting a Carnival Crown activity morning.
Once again Ryde Carnival keeps to its traditional dates with the Children’s Carnival on Wednesday, the Main Carnival on Thursday and the Illuminated Carnival on Saturday.
Wednesday 30th August
13:30 – 14:30 – Minghella Square – Band of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers playing
14:00 – 15:00 – Childrens Carnival – Assembly and judging and sets off at 15:00 from upper Dover Street, led by the Fusiliers Band.
Thursday 31st August
13:00 – 15:00 – Giant Bubbles on the Beach (next to Big Kahuna) – A demonstration of how to make giant bubbles (big enough to surround a child!)
18:00-19:00 – Main Carnival – Assembly and judging Canoe Lake, carnival sets off at 19:00 prompt.
Friday 1 September
13:00 – 13:30 – Minghella Square to St Thomas Church Garden in a wheelbarrow – Competitors wheel their gardens through town to then be judged in a competition to win Busy Bee vouchers.
Saturday 2nd September
19:30-20:30 – Illuminated Carnival – Assembly and judging Canoe Lake, set off at 20:30
Next year Ryde Carnival is celebrating its 130th anniversary and therefore it is hoped that this year’s event will raise enough money to enable organisers to invest in an even more spectacular Carnival week in 2018.
