The Ryde Society, said to be the Island’s fastest growing residents group, will celebrate a good first year at its annual general meeting this coming Monday (20th May).
The society has been responsible for inspiring a big debate on ways of improving the town since it was established just a year ago. Many hundreds of members have joined the Society over the past 12 months.
Councillor Michael Lilley, Ryde’s new Mayor, will be the first of a series of speakers at Monday’s event at The Royal Esplanade Hotel, starting 19:00.
At Monday’s AGM the society will elect a Chairperson, Deputy Chair, Secretary, Treasurer and chairs of small groups involved with the environment, planning and potentially even a Young Ryde Society. There will also be the election of 2 members of the Ryde Regeneration Forum.
Current Chairwoman, Stella Davis, says:
“We need people who live in Ryde who have a little time and some interesting skills to come and join us. We have a group in Elmfield, but we need one in Oakfield and in Haylands – any volunteers?
“The motto at the base of the official Ryde crest may be heraldic Latin, but it fits – ‘a lovely, healthy town with lots to do’ – and that’s what we want. It’s the kind of place most people dream of living in.
“This town is the people who live in it. We all have one thing in common – that we love the town we live in and we want it to be a great place for our grand-children”.
