Last Saturday saw the Dash and Splash across Sandown Bay, but this coming Saturday (6th August) will see 82 swimmers racing from the beach alongside Sandown Pier and then swimming across the Bay to finish at the old Shanklin Pier.
The Race starts at 14:30 and the first swimmers to complete the course should be around 15:10.
This is the 64th year of the event, which is organised by the Isle of Wight Marlins Masters Swim Club, and is supported by 25 kayakers and canoeists; the Sandown & Shanklin Independent Lifeboat; Ryde Inshore Rescue and several Shanklin Deep Sea Fishermen in their motor boats, all of whom provide the safety for the swimmers.
Bob Cooper, Safety Officer for the event says:
“This swim continues to be popular amongst the open water swimmers and we welcome many of the 82 competitors from the mainland.
“This year we will be swimming with a Spring Tide so I expect fast times. I look forward to seeing lots of people watching the start as the swimmers go down the beach and into the sea.
“We are pleased to welcome the Island’s Para Olympian, Gary Watson, who will present the trophies at the Shanklin Sailing Club.”
