Red Funnel say they are extremely proud of the crew of Red Eagle following yesterday’s rescue of 2 people in the water off Calshot.
As previously reported by Island Echo, Red Eagle launched her rescue boat shortly before 10:00 yesterday morning (Saturday) when 2 persons were spotted in the water whilst the car ferry was travelling from Southampton to East Cowes.
The 2 casualties were pulled from the water and transferred to Red Eagle before eventually being landed at East Cowes, where paramedics and Coastguard Rescue Officers checked over the duo. 1 was taken to St Mary’s Hospital as a precaution.
Chris Sibley, Risk, Safety and Compliance Director at Red Funnel, has today said:
“Due to the swift actions of our crew, there was a short delay of 25 minutes to the sailing. It was an incredible team effort by all involved.
“I am extremely proud of Red Eagle’s team for their quick thinking and efforts in this morning’s rescue operation. We also send our well wishes to the men.”
It has been confirmed that 1 of the men was tangled in kite lines, whilst the other was in a kayak. Both were exhausted after battling the rough conditions on the Solent.
The pair were spotted by the crew of Red Eagle, who alerted Southampton VTS and Solent Coastguard.

However, have to agree with Barbara.
What on Earth were these people doing out in such conditions!
Not only risking their own lives, but that if the Red Funnel crew members, AND inconveniencing the people on the ferry, who were most likely primarily Key type workers!
They are obviously adventurous, put them on the front line in some way.
I don`t suppose there is any chance of delivering the said kite surfing kayaking chuckle brothers to the nearest psychiatric hospital for a six week assessment is there? Some people should be aware of their limitations. Clearly, they are not!
Everyone is justly proud of those hands who went down to rescue the people.
Who would want to go down on a line from the ferry – see picture – and then have the stress and struggle of pulling people from the water. It takes a lot of guts to do that.
Obviously, they have trained, but on this occasion, the people shouldn’t have put themselves in the position of needing to be rescued.
A week’s paid holiday for the crew, I think.
If people are willing to take these risks why not just leave them and let them suffer from their actions.
