Wightlink Wight-Mountain team members Allan Cook, Ewan Cook, Nick Earley and Alfie Haydon travelled to Eelmore Plain near Aldershot to compete in the Gorrick Brass Monkey Winter Series 2 ‘New Year Hangover’ on Sunday (7th January). This was a new course for the Series which needed last-minute adjustments due to the recent adverse weather, but it proved to be a success with fast-flowing single track linked to firm fire roads making for some great racing. Following their podium results in the first round, Nick and Ewan were gridded on the front row with Alfie on row 3. The Senior riders set off fast and Nick took the lead by winning the holeshot (the first corner) which put him in good stead for the remainder of the race. Nick managed to stay away for the 2hr race and after 4 laps of the course just missed out on his first win of the season, taking a creditable 2nd place in 1hr 58mins. The race behind Nick was heating up with Alfie and Ewan battling it out with the rest of the Junior riders. Alfie had a great race, picking off riders over 3 laps and he pushed on to take 3rd place, missing out on 2nd by just 3 seconds in the race to the line. Ewan suffered a bit of bad luck but managed to take 5th place over 3 laps. Allan, competing in the Grand Vet category, was just outside the top 20 in his race finishing mid-pack.
A great day of racing for the team, leaving it all to play for in the next round on the 28th of January. Nick is now standing in 2nd place overall in the senior category of the series. Ewan and Alfie are currently in 4th and 5thplace respectively with only one point separating them in the under-17s.
