Newport are just 180 minutes away from a return to the Wessex Premier.
The County Town club face bogey team Petersfield Town at Smallbrook Stadium in the semi final of the Wessex Division 1 play offs at 19:45 this evening (Tuesday).
Unfortunately, Newport have had a poor record against the Rams. Back in August, Petersfield dumped the Port out of both the Wessex League Cup and the Hampshire Senior Cup. In Wessex Division 1, the Rams beat the Port 1-2 at Smallbrook in November and then again 3-0 at Love Lane in March.
In the 4 games played between the 2 teams this season, the Rams have netted 9 times and conceded only once. Let’s hope that this time the Island side can put in a match-winning performance when it really counts.
The Port also reached the playoffs last season. In the semi-final, they beat Folland Sports on penalties, before losing 2-3 to Laverstock & Ford in the final.
If the Port win, they will then face the winners of the 2nd semi-final between New Milton Town and Hamworthy Recreation (to be played tomorrow (Wednesday)) in the final on Saturday (29th April) with the Island side having home advantage.
A large crowd is expected at Smallbrook this evening, and the car park is expected to be busy. The club has therefore advised spectators to arrive early and share lifts if possible.
