Police are responding to concerns from Islanders that quieter roads are now becoming a bit of a race track for motorists.
Officers from the Joint Operations Unit have been conducting speed checks on Long Lane on the outskirts of Newport this morning (Tuesday).
The proactive work comes following several requests for Police to take action on motorists who are flouting the law.
Speed traps are often seen as a money maker, but responding to the opinion Inspector Matt Moss has said:
“A tip for the people who will want to criticise this with the money making or nothing better to do standard comments – if users of our roads stick to the speed limit they have nothing to worry about”.

They need to come to north toad Shanklin if they come down Arthur’s hill and the traffic lights are green it’s foot down , they go past our house at well over the speed limit some so fast you can’t see what make it is we have elderly people living in this road so please come and check
You hear them all over the island. Empty roads are a magnet for these brainless petrolheads
Victoria Avenue Shanklin is more like brans hatch, but let’s face reality a very high percentage of Island residents don’t give a dam.
And I don’t know if it’s my imagination; but from my observation young lady drivers have become very aggressive drivers
There’s been a lot of accidents even fatalities involving female drivers, no doubt I will be heaverly voted down..
60 .mph speed limit in shanklin town has been force for a number of years …u make a fuss and they all come out of there hole,s. To have a go at you…and I don,t mean the young one,s…good luck nice meaning well person,,p.s..keep it head down..lol… Ptd
Sadly North Road Shanklin has been totally lawless for years.
The toads are a terrible plaice nowdays!
So advertise the fact & tip them off, great policing
Surely the police themselves can hear the speedster winding up along Medina Way, and elsewhere in the town, or is the double- glazing extra good at the Police Station
Can they visit Binstead Hill too please? Speeding bad enough in normal times, but ridiculous speeds being driven at, at the moment in a 30 mph limit…..
Happening all over Island, Idiots taking advantage of less traffic, pity there aren’t enough police to get on top of crime in every respect.
Military road seems more than ever a high speed opportunity for motorcyclists!!! We can hear them from our house in Brighstone village and when they have finished some drive through the village at well over the 30 mph limit. So dangerous now that more walkers are in small lanes.
There are plenty of police but they are making sure people are not buying unnecessary items from supermarkets or stopping people and asking them where are they going and why. Some of them are even in their works uniform absolutely crazy pissed with power or what
Newport Road Godshill are seeing speed idiots.
The proactive work comes following several requests for Police to take action on motorists who are flouting the law.
…………………………..
There have been numerous requests for proactive policing on shoplifting and burglary -but no rapid response there.
…………
A tip for the people who will want to criticise this with the money making or nothing better to do standard comments – if users of our roads stick to the speed limit they have nothing to worry about”.
a tip for inspector moss – if police were not taking the easy option of pestering motorists over petty traffic violations, then they would be able to have a much higher clear up rate on other, real crimes and they would have nothing to worry about.
I bet they catch loads as it’s like a normal school day in east cowes ,driving about with their hoods down enjoying the sun , has someone forgot to tell me all restrictions are lifted ?
Wow I live in East Cowes, and drive with the roof down enjoying the sun……….. on my way to work without speeding
caroline
the police need to come to Brading, the main road is awful now, very noisy.
Hard to believe that in 2020 after decades of attempts to reduce speeding, speeding remains a huge social problem, not to mention the constant nuisance from the racer exhausts which affect almost everyone nowadays (and worse since recent road resurfacing). Inspector Moss, I hope you catch a few, but can’t the IOW have a top draw strategy to offer a real and permanent solution to reduce speeding. Btw, lots of speeding between Ryde and Brading, starts at East Hill Road/Appley Road/Marlborough Road. No speed reducing measures despite 2 schools.
I have been asking the police to monitor the speed down Ventnor Road, but their response was ” nobody has been hurt or killed yet so there is nothing we can do”
I wonder how many people on this thread are happy to speed through someone else’s street or road but complain when happens to them? Speeding is a national problem that requires a national response, the occasional speed checks are a temporary sticking plasters that just satisfy the vocal few. If the police are going to tackle this issue they will need a lot more resources than what they have got now..
Why not let the traffic wardens go and catch the speeding cars, this will free up the police
They’re not qualified/authorised to use ‘speed check’ devices…
Our medical teams, fire service and essential workers are doing a wonderful job. So far the police have not come out of this with any credit, either on the island or nationally
Where is comrade chairman Critchley nowadays. He normally complains about the uniformed services over zealous behaviour.
Cameras are so cheap now. Don’t need film, just a memory card. Could catch most if placed on many roads. Pathetic in this day an age they have to have some PC with a camera in hand.
Fixed location speed cameras were ‘banned’ ages ago….
Isn’t it awful how there was a tragic and terrible accident not too long ago resulting in a very young life being lost way to early and yet still people are risking not only their lives but countless others and yet people still continue too drive like complete and utter idiots? I just hope noone else young or old loses a life but I’m sure another accident will follow. I just dont know why people cant learn from past accidents and why they feel the need to speed around like brainless thick idiots. Utter stupidity.
They need to clock the speed of some of the cars and motorbikes in Ashey Road and Smallbrook lane in Ryde , it’s like a race track ,Not even stopping or slowing down at the roundabout ,!
I can see everybody is stuck at home! Me mine my road my stŕeet moaning whinging bunch.
People are dying all over the world not seen a corona car yet.
Honestly
Toyota made the Corolla, is that close enough?!
Yes overner, they got killed by a speeding car… Ptd
They want to check out Lake High St and going up Lake Hill, it’s like Silverstone at times.
Shanklin old village the main high street through church road 20mph never adhered to at normal times now it’s horrendous with some factions of the island I think they also like the echo effect of their exhausts as they rev going through . People please be aware there are residents whose bedrooms and lounges are a mere couple of feet from the road and the old village acts an amphitheater. There has been one spin off already that then drove off it’s only a matter of time before a person injured or property damaged . Please be considerate
People speed because the majority of Isle of Wight drivers travel at half the speed limits therefore blocking up roads and causing congestion and frustration. Can’t count the amount of times I have sat behind a driver doing 30mph all the way to Newport!
Humans are in general very ignorant.. Everytime I am traveling I witness people driving like maniacs.. I don’t know Why they make cars with alllowing such speeds anyway.. Fix problems properly so it can’t be abused.. People can’t be trusted to just be considerate.. Never worked that way….
Just keep rushing to your graves and sadly many times take others with you others which drive safely and considerate….
Speed bumps would sort them out.
