Wightlink-Wight Mountain Cycle Racing Team members Ewan and Mackenzie Cook, and Nadia Lele, competed in the Gorrick Spring Classic 3 at Highlands Farm on Sunday (24th March). Ewan was racing in the Open Sport category in a field of 26 riders on a very technical and twisty course. He got off to a brilliant start, breaking away with 2 other riders on the first lap before he put in an attack which reduced the trio to 2. Over the next couple of laps it became a battle for 1st place and then halfway through the 4th and final lap Ewan put in a massive attack and took the win with a minute lead. Ewan says:
“I felt really good today and on the last lap I knew I had to go full berries and dug deep to take the win.”
Nadia, started steady in the Women’s Sport race and launched an attack on Lap 2, picking off riders to move up the field and then found herself on her own chasing down the leader. Despite crashing on one of the rooty climbs, Nadia showed her class by powering on to take 2nd place on the podium. Nadia says:
“The course was very technical with no time to even drink, but it was a lot of fun to ride. I really enjoyed this race and I’m looking forward to the next round”
Mackenzie, competing in the Youth class up against a field of more experienced, powerful riders, dug deep and pushed himself to the limit. Unfortunately, due to the course being slippery, he suffered a crash but still came home in 6th position. Mackenzie says: “I’m still new to this and learning with every race. I’m really looking forward to the rescheduled round 2 of the Series”
