The iconic Pier2Pier sea swim is returning for its 69th year in 2023 and is seeking kayakers and canoeists to act as safety craft assistance for the 200 entrants.
Swimmers will tackle an 1.8-mile course from Sandown Pier to Shanklin Rowing Club, which is located by the site of the old Shanklin Pier that was destroyed in the gales of 1987.
The event will take place on Saturday 22nd July 2023 with the start at 15:00. There is also a reserve date of Saturday 5th August at 15:00 if conditions are unfavourable.
All of the 200 places have now been taken, made up of 84 Islanders and 116 Mainlanders. Trophies will also be awarded for various swim-stroke and age categories with a commemorative keepsake presented to each winning swimmer.
In order for the swim to take place, organisers are now seeking kayakers and canoeists to paddle with the swimmers to ensure the first line of safety craft. These are supported by Sandown & Shanklin Independent Lifeboat, the Ryde Inshore Rescue Lifeboat and members of the Shanklin Deep Sea Fishermen.
Any kayakers or canoeists available to assist in being safety craft assistance should email [email protected] to declare their interest.
