A concert is to be held by the Phoenix Choir at Holy Trinity, Bembridge later this month to help raise funds to restore stonework.
The Choir’s programme will include tunes made famous by Cilla Black, Manhattan Transfer, Celine Dion, Leonard Cohen, Rod Stuart and the Red Army Choir. Songs from Les Miserables and music from the film Gladiator will also be part of the wide ranging programme.
Holy Trinity church lies at the centre of Bembridge, its spire rising high above the village. But this well-loved Victorian building is suffering from the effects of time and coastal winds; as with all older churches, there’s a constant battle to keep the building warm, watertight and in good order. A fundraising campaign has enabled work to take place on the roof, but decaying stonework around windows and doors urgently needs attention.
Vicar Revd Amanda Bloor says:
“We are lucky to have a community that loves and values this church. We want to be here for generations to come, as a place of worship and prayer and a wonderful setting for weddings, baptisms and funerals”.
The Phoenix Choir is a 50-strong mixed choir who have been raising funds for local charities and good causes for the past 8 years. This recently reached a cumulative total in excess of £40,000. Robin Burnett, the choir’s Musical Director said:
“We always receive such a warm welcome at Holy Trinity, and we are really looking forward to returning there for another concert”.
The concert, which takes place on Saturday 28th October, starts at 19:30. There will be a raffle and interval refreshments.
