Dog owners are being warned to take extra care following the discovery of palm oil that has been washed up on the Ventnor coast.
Green and Forster Veterinary Surgery in Carisbrooke has issued a warning to Islanders to be careful when walking dogs around the South Wight area.
Palm oil looks like waxy white lumps and some dogs are tempted to eat it. Some dogs become seriously ill after ingesting even small amounts and there have been cases of fatalities where larger quantities have been eaten. Initial symptoms include vomiting and diarrhoea which can lead to severe dehydration.
If you think that your dog may have ingested palm oil, you are urged to contact the surgery immediately on 01983 522822.
