Scarrotts Lane Bakery in Newport has fallen victim to a burglary overnight, with both the shop and adjoining office damaged – and a nearby cafe was also targeted.
As well as the theft of the till and a number of charity boxes, the bakery has seen damaged caused to windows, doors and even light fittings. Produce was also strewn across the floor – including the Island’s much-loved blobby biscuits.
Thankfully, the vandalism hasn’t stopped the business from operating meaning wholesale deliveries have continued to be distributed to outlets across the Island.
Scarrotts Lane Bakery is part of Community Action Isle of Wight with all profits going to the charity to support the work it does locally.
Mike Bulpitt, CEO of Community Action IW, says:
“After a morning clear up we’re ready to go again this afternoon, but it’s just a bit dispiriting, given everything else going on”.
The Retreat Cafe, on Scarrots Lane, was also broken into last night. The cafe’s door was smashed in and stock taken, which was then dumped in the car park. It is understood a third commercial property was also targeted.
CCTV cameras are being checked as investigations into the incident continue. Anyone with information should contact Police on 101 quoting 44200158083.
Social order is breaking down, this is just the start. Drugs addiction and less cash in society will see massive increases in crime, and anti social behaviour.
The culprits know that to jail someone now is unlikely, so have a free hand to rob, smash, with nothing now to fear, IF they ever did.
Horrible people about, doing vile things especially when Café owners are struggling to survive now.
Shame the virus takes the wrong end of society.
Quite Harry, to counter this trend calls for strong action from government. Not to be intimidated by those objecting to CCTV, so that criminals can be tracked, identified and apprehended.
-Then, as an alternative to prison, an extension of Community Service, longer stints doing useful work to try to instill some self-respect.
-Curtail offenders rights to association with their peers, particularly fellow offenders.
-Insist that Police are seen out and about ‘On The Beat’ 24/7, like in the old days, rather than in their Panda cars or on computers. It’s a visual deterrant and reassures the public.
-Stronger action against drug dealers, peddlers and users, to try to curb this scourge on our society, including confiscation of all their assets.
It calls for assertive action to deal with such a corrosive influence on our culture, especially on our young and impressionable…
