‘NO FIRM DATE’ FOR FAST CAT REINTRODUCTION SAY WIGHTLINK

Published:

Wightlink says it has ‘no firm date’ for the reintroduction of its FastCat services between Ryde and Portsmouth, despite growing demand from commuters and those planning visits to the Island as lockdown eases.

The ferry firm maintains that it is continuing to review the demand for foot passenger travel between the Pier Head in Ryde and Portsmouth Harbour, but insists that very few people are currently trying to cross the Solent. The service has been suspended since December last year in the wake of coronavirus travel restrictions.

The announcement came as the Wightlink website began to show timetables for later this month, although details of those departures have since been removed.

A Wightlink spokesperson said:

“There is plenty of capacity on Wightlink’s car ferries from Portsmouth to Fishbourne to carry everyone who wishes to travel at this time, whether in a vehicle or as a foot passenger. Wightlink tickets and passes are also being accepted on Hovertravel services.

“Wightlink looks forward to reopening its Fast Cat services as soon as demand returns but at this time does not have a firm date to announce.”

They won’t bring them back until the island line is back up and running I looked at their website earlier and it was showing a timetable from 1st May

Based on Wightlink’s very strange interpretation of ‘demand’ it is unlikely we will see the FastCat back in service before the Festival in September this year, if then. After that event it will no doubt be suspended again “until further notice”.

I mentioned this the other week that the car ferry between Yarmouth and Lymington will end in 2022 and will become fastcat only according to a wightlink insider. Perhaps they are using this period to look at the possiblities of using wight sun and wight light as extra Portsmouth to Fishbourne to aid the summer period. Then 1 cat can do Yarmouth to Lymington whislt the other does Ryde to Portsmouth.

Pretty difficult to get a camper on a passenger ferry…

At least Red Funnel cares for their customers. People will want to travel from 12th April as things are opening up, but clearly Wightlink don’t care about that. Well, when they restart, show them what you think when you vote with your feet. I’ll stick to hover as I get a discount through work and it’s £3 cheaper then the cat for a day return.
