Rumours of up to 100 employees being made redundant at Wight Shipyard Co in East Cowes have been rubbished by the company.
In a statement issued to Island Echo last Monday, it was confirmed that no employees are being made redundant. In fact, the company has multiple future orders meaning the business is well and truly booming.
According to WSC, the yard is currently busy completing 4 fast ferries for a Maltese tourism operator, which are due for completion at the end of March. They also also preparing for the next aluminium crew transfer vessel in build immediately after.
It appears that rumours have begun to circulate locally due to the number of subcontractors – which by their nature come and go – being reduced as projects change.
Joanna Daly of Wight Shipyard Co has said:
“We had to have an increase in sub-contract labour to complete the Maltese contract in the time available to us.”
“In addition to skilled labour across the Island, we also had to hire many sub-contractors from further afield to accommodate delivery of this contract, with varying skills required at different times during the build programme.”
“We have always maintained a core team of workers who are all Island based. The intention is that this continues.”
