The Newport Women’s Masters crew of Julia Wilks, Julia Coulson, Julie Clarke, Fran Ladd – coxed by Nick Salter – won the Masters 40+ in their 1st-ever regatta race at Newport last weekend.
In a hard-fought race right up until the last quarter, Newport came out on top holding off the favourites and South Coast Champions from BTC (Southampton) by 2 lengths to claim the Daisy Rich Trophy. The average age of the Newport crew is 58.
In the 2nd round of the Hants & Dorset season, the closest race of the day came down to a canvas win for Southampton over Ryde in the Men’s Junior 4s event. Itchen took the Men’s Senior 4s title, and BTC took the Senior Women’s title.
Newport also fielded a Novice Men’s 4 of Will Loveday Powell, Connor Garner, Boris Hare, Hayden Tiffin. finishing 3rd in the final. Southampton had the best of the racing overall, winning the Aggregate Cup.
Sunday brought the Small Boats competition. Connor Garner and Toby Batchelor competed for Newport in the Men’s Novice sculls. Toby came up against the finalist from 2022, Ben Sanderson from Ryde, in the first round and lost by a canvas. Connor lost to the eventual winner Joe Hoyland from Poole in the semi-final.
Newport’s J16 quad of William Loveday-Powell, Boris Hare, Hayden Tiffin and Atur Rozvodovski were 2nd in their final.
The final was won by Ryde’s J16 quad: Joe Bird, Isaac Gibson, Charlie Watts, Lars Groothius, coxed by young Harry Watts. This was a 1st win for or “Darrell” – the Ryde club’s newest boat – just 2 weeks after she was launched.
