Newport Rowing Club has had a very competitive season so far, racing in a number of regattas along the South Coast.

The club’s most competitive crew has been the Men’s Junior Four, who have consistently put in strong performances throughout the season. The crew made up of Jonjo Findlay, Matt Chalmers, Ollie Coulson and Toby Batchelor have been in the mix at the top end of the championship table, however, they unfortunately could not secure the championship which went to a very strong crew from Shanklin.

Newport’s Women’s Novice Four competed in their first-ever Hants and Dorset season placing very respectably in their races, regularly beating much more experienced crews.

Both Chloe Hughes and Beth Walpole competed in the Women’s Novice Sculls category. Chloe has been looking very competitive throughout the season, remaining a constant threat to the top crews. Beth had another strong season and is looking to continue to build on that through the winter months.

The club’s first win of the season came from Jonjo Findlay at Poole Regatta in the Men’s Novice Sculls category with a very convincing win over the other crews. He then placed 2nd the next regatta at Coalporters in the Junior Sculls category in a very close final.

Toby Batchelor and Ollie Coulson gave the club their second win at Itchen Regatta beating many of the top crews in the Junior Pairs category. It came after disappointment at Coalporters Regatta where they had to pull out the final due to injury.

The club has 2 races left in the season, then the athletes will be focusing on sharpening up before the annual South Coast Championships in Dartmouth on the 14th of September.
