Former Newport captain John Price played for the England Veterans’ Over 55s team that finished runners up at the International Masters tournament in Thailand. John – who appeared in 236 games for Newport – was captain when the club won the Southern League Eastern Division in the 2000/2001 season and earned the team promotion to the Southern League Premier Division, the highest level of football played by an Island team. Price captained Newport to several Isle of Wight Gold Cups and led the team during the club’s memorable 3-2 away win over Hereford United in the FA Cup. The former Newport captain scored a header in England’s 2-0 win against Thailand and a further 2 goals in the 5-0 victory over Australia. England also beat China 3-2, but lost their final game to an excellent Iranian team 1-4 to finish runners-up. Champions Iran included many of the players in their ’98 World Cup squad in their ranks.
“It was an incredible experience in Thailand. We were treated like kings. “I lost a fair bit of weight playing 4 games in 35+C temperatures. “It’s a shame we couldn’t bring the trophy home.”
