Newport – with the support of the other island clubs – hosted the 1st of 2 time trials on the Medina this winter on Sunday (11th February). The 1st Division was rowed over the 3.3km Head of the Medina course, starting from Newport. 12 crews, a mixture of 4s, pairs, doubles, quads and singles, from Newport, Ryde and Shanklin Sandown took part in Div 1. The fastest boat was the Newport Junior 4, despite taking on some wash from a passing cruiser. The crew of Chris Waters, Connor Garner, Nathaniel Hamilton, Boris Hare and coxed by Marianna Hare finished in a time of 15.33. The 2nd Division – again starting from Newport – was rowed over the shorter 1.7km course. The tide had turned, which meant faster times all round. This division attracted 16 entries. The Newport Junior crew were again the fastest boat in a time of 6.52.08, but the outstanding performance in this division was from Shanklin’s Fred Giemza-Pipe – sculling in a single – who finished in a time of 6.52.9. Newport Men’s Novice and Women’s Masters crews also competed in both divisions and finished with competitive times.
