Quarr Abbey will host the launch of 2 new books, with readings scheduled for Friday (22nd August) at 17:30.
The event will bring together literature enthusiasts and members of the local community to celebrate the work of 2 acclaimed authors. The tranquil surroundings of Quarr Abbey provide an atmospheric backdrop for this special evening of readings and discussion.
Father Luke Bell OSB will present Truth in Person, a thought-provoking book which explores the human longing for personal connection in an age increasingly dominated by technology. He argues that truth cannot be fully understood through analysis alone, but rather is found through the depth and richness of human relationships. This reflection on personhood offers a timely message in a world where digital communication often overshadows face-to-face encounters.
Poet Maggie Sawkins will showcase Flyweight, a collection brimming with themes of female boxing, sibling rivalry, and the struggles of being human. Her poetry, described as powerful and dynamic, captures the raw energy of physical and emotional extremes, weaving together experiences that resonate with readers on many levels.
The readings will take place in the Abbey Courtyard, or in the Courtyard Gallery if wet, offering a welcoming space for attendees to listen, reflect, and engage with the authors. Copies of the books will be available, with an opportunity to meet the writers following the readings.
Visitors are also invited to attend Vespers in the Abbey Church at 17:00.
