The aging tower block classrooms at Carisbrooke College in Newport will soon be knocked to the ground following approval of plans for a new school building at the Wellington Road site.
An application for the new school was submitted back in November and was this week approved by the Isle of Wight Council’s Planning Committee.
Although the school will soon be housed in a modern building, internal square footage will drop from 11,000 to 5,073 and there will be 11 fewer employees at Carisbrooke College. Pupils numbers are also going to drop to 600.
The new school will be primarily built up of 3 areas: the dining, drama and main hall; the teaching wing and the sports hall.
Head of School, Robert Maddox has said:
“We are now full steam ahead for the new build to begin and to provide some fantastic state of the art facilities for our amazing students.
“We look forward to welcoming the bulldozers to the East Block site very shortly”.
