Motorists traveling out of Newport are now using part of the brand new roundabout at St George’s Way – the site of the new ASDA development.
The journey in and out of the Island’s county town has remained fairly unchanged for a number of years, but vehicles are now able to use half of a new roundabout that has been created between Coppins Bridge and Shide, next to Newport Football Club.
Work to clear the site ready for the Island’s first ASDA store, which is scheduled to open later this year, has been underway since August. A one-way system came into force in October and remains in place whilst the second half of the roundabout is created.
Drivers heading out of Newport are now diverted back across to the correct side of the road and around the roundabout, before continuing on as normal towards Shide. A new set of permanent traffic lights are to be installed at Shide junction.
Continued disruption is to be expected as the works progress on both St George’s Way and the spine road to Bluebell Meadows.
