A dramatic video showing how a simple fire can quickly develop and take hold has been captured as part of a training exercise for new recruits to the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service.
Over the past 2 weeks, the group of 7 firefighters from East Cowes, Freshwater, Newport, Sandown, Shanklin and Ventnor have been undergoing their Breathing Apparatus training, giving them the ability to enter a burning building on a real life shout.
Search techniques and basic safety training was delivered at Ryde’s Learning and Development Centre last week, but the temperature has somewhat risen over the past couple of days with the new recruits going into a live fire situation for the first time.
Yesterday (Tuesday) the 2019 intake of retained firefighters visited the fire behaviour container at Sandown. It’s here that they donned their BA sets and were put into the heart of a fire in a controlled environment.
The video shows how in just 2-and-a-half minutes the flame from a candle becomes out of control and turns a domestic dwelling sized room into a toxic 300c inferno. Flames engulf the ‘room’ and spread overhead, with visibility becoming limited as every second passes.
This acts as a graphic reminder that working smoke alarms could alert you to a situation like this in just seconds, giving you and your family time to escape.
