Caroline Peel has been appointed as the new High Sheriff of the Isle of Wight.
Mrs Peel lives in Bembridge but was raised in Cowes. She spent time working in London and returned to the Island in 2012 with her husband, Jonathan.
A swearing-in ceremony was due to take place at the RNLI’s inshore lifeboat centre in East Cowes, but the ongoing coronavirus pandemic threw a spanner in the works. The centre was chosen as Mrs Peel is the vice-chairman of the Island RNLI board. Instead, the legal service was conducted via video call – thought to be the first time such activity has taken place.
Mrs Peel, who has appointed April Newtown as under-Sheriff, has taken over the role from her predecessor Geoff Underwood. A new High Sheriff is selected every 12 months.
could someone tell me why we need a high sheriff and a under sheriff ,and what useful service they provide and who foots the bill.
We need someone to lasso the baddies in Bembridge. Need a silver star badge to asset her authority first though.
Why does some organisation or a select few select people to these roles and what is the purpose of such roles? Should you not have a referendum to decide whether or not such roles are desired or necessary ? And if they are deemed necessary surely it should be filled democratically, open to all islanders to nominate their chosen candidates and to vote to fill these posts. These people seem to be imposed upon the islanders at present and are not representative of the common folk.

Out dated, waste of time and money and who cares!!!!!! With everything else going on this was seen as important!!! would you believe. I am sure it will only appeal to certain type of person and not the ones living in the real world who are worried about their jobs their wages and where their next mortgage or rent payment is coming from.
Still there is a new sheriff in town !!!! I’m sure we will all sleep better tonight knowing this ( not )
At the end of the 12 months can we have all the details of what she has done and how much money was spent

Mrs Peel probably goes to the same hairdresser as the Lord Lieutenant’s wife and is a member of the same dinner party circle that includes other illuminates like the people who selected our wonderful MP.
