Newport’s Neighbourhood Policing Team have carried out a successful operation to prevent road obstructions and ensure the safety of children outside a primary school in the area.
Between Monday 24th September and Friday 28th September, officers carried out a special operation on Wellington Road outside Carisbrooke CofE Primary School. Officers patrolled the area every day between 08:30 to 09:30 and 14:45 to 15:45. They spoke to drivers to ensure the road was safe for children to cross and that drivers were not causing unnecessary obstructions.
The action was taken following concerns raised by parents and members of the public about road safety in the area.
PC Ben Sharland said:
“The operation was a real success, we received an overwhelming amount of positive feedback from parents walking their children to school.
“We issued one fixed penalty notice for leaving a vehicle in a dangerous position and provided over forty drivers with information sheets. Our policy was to issue everyone with an information sheet and only to issue a fixed penalty notice to those who had already been warned.
“We’ve attached a comparison photo to show what the road looked like on the Monday morning compared to the Friday.
“We will repeat the operation with no notice at various times during the school year to re-enforce the message”.
