Trading Standards have been alerted to an incident in which a locally-bought candle exploded just inches away from a mother and her 6-month-old baby.
Stephanie Hankin was relaxing on the sofa with daughter Daisy when all of a sudden she heard a bang – a candle which had been slowly burning away had exploded with shards of glass scattered everywhere.
The candle, which was bought from a discount store in Shanklin back in February, looked ‘a bargain’ said Stephanie…
“It was in a glass container with a metal stand and smelt lovely. The saying ‘if it is too good to be true, it usually is’ rings true here”.
Thankfully, both mum and baby were uninjured in the incident. The candle was just inches away on a table beside the sofa.
Stephanie, from Lake, adds:
“I feel blessed because this could have been a lot worse. All the worst-case scenarios were running through my mind – what if a splinter had gone into my babies’ eye? What if she had been in another room and it had caused a fire?”

The Isle of Wight Council’s Trading Standards department has been alerted to the incident.
It would be good to know which Discount Store the item was bought from.

That was a close shave, must have been a shock.
I never allowed candles in my house, i’m just too clumsy. I understand why they feel nice. My insurance site (had a quick look) says in 2019 candles caused 310 house fires in the UK.
Most of this junk is from China, where it clearly hasn’t passed safety tests. We had the same happen and the glass was so hot and went everywhere. Bin the junk.
