Carphone Warehouse has announced that it is set to close all standalone stores in the UK, meaning the Isle of Wight will see yet more empty shops in both Ryde and Newport.
Dixons Carphone has confirmed that all stores will close on or before 3rd April with 2,900 job losses. Other staff members are expected to be given new roles within other areas of the group.
Although stores in Ryde High Street and Newport High Street will close, there will still be a Carphone Warehouse area within Currys PC World on Wakes Retail Park in Newport.
Alex Baldock, Group Chief Executive, has today (Tuesday) said:
“Today’s tough decision is an essential part of that, the next step in making our UK mobile business a success for customers, colleagues and other shareholders.
“Clearly, with unsustainable losses of £90m expected this year, mobile is currently holding back the whole business.
“There’s never an easy time for an announcement like this, but the turbulent times ahead only underline the importance of acting now.
“I don’t underestimate how upsetting this news will be for our colleagues, and we’ll treat everyone with honesty, respect and care.”

What else do you expect if you shop online. Closed shops, people out of work, more lorries on the road and no after sales service. Still you get what you pay for.
I’m not surprised if I’m honest, that shop was useless! I went in to buy a Samsung Galaxy Watch (which they had on display) and was told they do not stock them but can order it in for collection. So when to Argos who had it in stock. I have to ask what their point is when you have the one at Curry’s now.
