Monkton Arts, the Ryde Arts Centre which has been affected by the recent flooding, will soon be hosting the work of Steve Baxter. Steve is the recent recipient of the Quay Arts Open prize of a solo show in the Michael West Gallery in 2025. The exhibition of sculpture – titled Unnatural – has been selected from recent work, which uses domestic and decorative materials to explore links between natural forces and the human condition. Steve Baxter says:
“It is poignant to have been compiling work for this show on this theme at a time when the weather on the Island has felt beyond natural and has made lives extremely challenging. “The area around Monkton has been swamped, and it is testament to the resilience of those living and working there – like Jenna and Dawn who run Monkton Arts – that they have dragged themselves back.”
Monkton Arts is open on weekdays from 10:30 to 16:00 (10:30 to 09:00 on Wednesdays). Unnatural runs from 28th November to 8th December.

It must just be a coincidence that ferries to and from the Island are a lot more reliable during the tourist season.
Can you imagine all these cancellations at the start of the IoW Festival? It just wouldn’t happen.

Knackered red Jets. Knackered car ferries. Knackered staff getting the abuse that should be directed at senior management. Please, please, Red Funnel, INVEST your obscene profits in new boats and give the people who pay your vastly inflated fares a decent and fairly priced service.
If Red Osprey is back why no explanation for it not being used to avoid cancellations?
Surely it’s time that our vital ferry links got the legal protection of a public service obligation.
It probably has to have its boxes ticked by the deadlegs at MCA.
What a state this company is in. The servicing and maintenance must be appalling, only 1 Red Jet limping along and car ferries that constantly break down. It’s obviously down to major cost cutting but appalling service as we have to rely on these ferries.
So glad I left the island. After struggling with a reliable ferry service for over 50 years, I decided to cut out the pain of cancelled ferries etc, by moving to the mainland. I miss a lot about the island, but do not miss the unreliable service and extortionate prices charged by all of the ferry firms.
Total trash shit service should be taken over..
How the h can a broken part seem too work ok on all the other crossings? Utter lies.us islanders cannot make plans or attend appointments…not fair
