The Lancaster Bomber Flypast -which was set to grace the skies above the Island this weekend during the Armed Forces Day celebrations – has been cancelled.
The Second World War plane – 1 of only 2 still flying – was set to take flight over the Island this weekend (25th June) at around 13:41 as part of the Armed Forces Day Celebrations.
However, a statement released today has confirmed that the iconic WWII bomber won’t be seen in the air as a result of an issue with a Merlin engine.
A spokesperson on the Isle of Wight Armed Forces Day Facebook Page has said:
“After what was a very brief call from BBMF HQ this morning it was confirmed that all their displays have been paused.
“We did reach out to see if there was any scope on other assets, but at this late point in proceedings, there are non-available.
“Although we only had the aircraft for a short time as it was transiting, it’s a major blow to those that were keen to see it. However, safety comes first.
“These are historic aircraft, and the Lancaster is only one of two flying. The preservation of the aircraft, the safety of the public and crew are paramount.
Article continues below this advertisement “The Royal Navy Parachute Display team are still dropping in, the BMX team will be amazing the crowds, all the interactive stalls and stands are ready to rock.”
Oh such a shame, wonderful planes, but the day will be fitting for all involved.
