Ventnor Arts Club hosts is to host its first jazz jam session on Friday (13th November) with the Jim Thorn Trio providing the foundation for visiting musicians to build on.
The trio comprises of Jim on piano, who is the organiser of Newport Jazz Weekend and has hosted jam sessions around the Isle of Wight for 8 years, as well as accompanying many professional jazz musicians. The second band member is Leon Simmonds on double bass, who is one of the Island’s best known and longest-serving musicians. The pair are accompanied by Ken Black on drums, who is highly respected for his Latin and jazz playing and is highly in demand.
Jazz fans are encouraged to go and enjoy an evening of music while musicians and vocalists are invited to play.
The session starts at 20:00 and finishes at 23:00 with the bar open throughout the evening from 19:00. There is an entrance fee of £3 for non-musicians and £2 for musicians.
When finding out more about the new event and the pricing structure, Jim Thorn was asked “Who decides if you’re a musician or not?”. Jim’s reply was straightforward… “I refund people £1 once I’ve heard them!”
