East Cowes Vics were knocked out of the Russell Cotes Cup at the 1st hurdle by Wessex Premier Brockenhurst on Tuesday evening.
This is the 2nd occasion Vics have been knocked of a cup competition by the New Forest side: back in August they were beaten by the Badgers at Beatrice Avenue in the FA Vase.
The 2 sides were level at half time with Vics’ Brad Young and Liam Newbold both picking up yellow cards.
Brockenhurst took the lead in the 67th minute through an own goal (1-0). 4 minutes later, the Badgers doubled their lead with a strike from man-of-the-match Marcello Rossi (2-0).
Ronan Moore was sent off for the home side 6 minutes from full time, but the Badgers held out until the final whistle to secure passage through to the 2nd round of the competition.
East Cowes Vics: Berry, Boyd-Kerr, Catania, Chapman (Jarvis), Coode, Neale (Johnson), Newbold, Ram, Voller (Chase), Yates (Reynolds), Young (Mumford).
After the game, Vics manager Alex Smith said:
“We did some good things and implemented elements of our game plan, but in the end sloppiness and a lack of focus cost us – which is frustrating.
“It was a competitive game which lacked a bit of quality all round. Credit to Brockenhurst who were clinical when it counted and, in the end, deservedly progressed to the next round.
“We’ve got a huge game on Saturday against Cove at home and we’ll be looking for a big bounce back.”
