UPDATE: Tonight’s game between Cowes Sports and Christchurch has been called off due to a waterlogged pitch.
Newport and Cowes resume their respective Wessex League campaigns this evening (Tuesday) with both sides playing their 1st league games of 2023.
In the Wessex Premier, 17th-placed Cowes Sports face 13th-placed Christchurch at Westwood Park. The Yachtsmen are currently on a winless 9-game run.
The Yachtsmen’s last victory was against Rayners Lane in the FA Vase back in October. Their last game on 6th December saw them lose 3-0 at Baffins Milton Rovers.
Cowes Sports assistant manager Andy Brown says:
“Christchurch won their last game and unlike us have not been affected by games being called off, possibly giving them the upper hand. We are doing everything to get the game on, especially having not played for 4 weeks.
“Fitness will be key. To aid this, the club has been supporting the lads (who continue to work hard during this challenging period), with some off field activities, although nothing obviously beats match fitness.
“Everyone remains focused and aim to start 2023 on front foot!”
Kick off (weather permitting) at Westwood Park is at 19:45.
A pitch inspection will take place at 11:45.
UPDATE: Newport’s game against Totton & Eling has been postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.
In Wessex Division 1, 4th-placed Newport travel to the mainland to play 10th-placed Totton & Eling.
With their Christmas fixture postponed, the Millers haven’t played since the beginning of December, when they narrowly lost by 1 goal to Verwood. The previous week, however, they snatched a good point from 5th placed Petersfield, showing they are more than capable of causing an upset.
For Port, this month is full of 6 pointers and top-of-the-table clashes, so every win is even more important. Having not played for nearly 3 weeks, the County Town club head into Tuesday’s game on the back of a workmanlike 2-0 victory against Vics on Boxing Day.
The Port still games in hand over most of their fellow promotion contenders, so it will be vital for the Island side to get points on the board take prior to facing promotion favourites Andover New Street later in January.
Kick off against Totton & Eling is at 19:45.
