Isle of Wight residents are now being charged over £100 a year for garden waste collections – believed to be the highest such charge in England. Isle of Wight Council has increased its annual subscription from £96 to £102 for the fortnightly service – an increase of 6.25% – which is thought to be the highest annual fee for garden waste anywhere in England. This compares with a subscription fee of between £40 and £60 charged by other councils. In some areas, the service is completely free. When the scheme was first launched in 2017 the service cost £60 and rose to £72 in 2022, with a further price hike last year to £96. Around 10,350 households subscribe to the service. Joanna Marchong, investigations campaign manager of the TaxPayers’ Alliance, has said:
“Isle of Wight residents will put their green thumbs down. “This council has increased the cost of garden waste collection to the highest in Britain, burdening taxpayers during a financially stressful time. “Councils should be delivering these services as cheaply as possible rather than increasing backdoor taxes.”
Council leader Phil Jordan has told The Daily Telegraph that residents are not obliged to pay for the extra service. Cllr Jordan said:
“It is discretionary, it’s not an obligation.”
The council leader further claimed that the Isle of Wight had received the lowest percentage funding increase of any local authority in England, leaving a shortfall of £400,000.

It’s not “Council’ it’s a privately operated service that is contracted to provide what were previously Public Services. Bin collections actually used to be included in the old Council Rates system.
Contracted by the Council and paid for by the same people who paid the rates and now pay council tax. We now pay twice.
The IWC have no regard for us. They will raise charges with little regard for the cost of delivering the service. Eventually less and less people will subscribe and they will claim there is no longer a call for it. How long before we see reports of fly tipped green waste?

The real crime here is that we’re given the lowest percentage increase for councils in the country by the charlatans in power in Westminster, aided and abetted by “Island Deal” Seely.
There was a time when local councils were run by people who understood business, who knew how to make every penny count. What do we have now? They are so out of their depth they leave the officers to ‘run’ our council, and they are comfy in their well paid jobs for life.

IOW has more expensive everything because all of it’s services are out-sourced to private, profit-seeking, share-holder led companies which, IOW have monopolies: Bus, Ferries, Bins. Everyone knows in-house services are cheaper to run & ca have the profits ploughed back into them.
Council doesn’t want the work of running them, probably because they couldn’t, look what they did with the chain bridge.

£1 million on the floating farce. But managed to pay millions for taxis and find another £366000.00 to ensure the council tax is reduced to near zero for some.
