UPDATE ON FRIDAY – Newport Carnival has been cancelled due to the bad weather forecast.
The Isle of Wight carnival season begins on Saturday (22nd July) with Newport main carnival setting off from South Street at 19:00.
Last year – 2022 – Newport Carnival celebrated its centenary with the biggest and best carnival Newport has seen since the 80s.
The Newport Carnival team have worked tirelessly behind the scenes to put on another spectacular display this year.
A vehicle-only parade which will be setting off from South Street shortly before the main procession, which starts at 19:00.
Shademakers – who performed at the Queen’s Jubilee Pageant last year – will be taking part with their 250-member group in the main procession.
Carnival funfairs will also be present at Seaclose Park.
Organisers of Newport Carnival have said:
“If you only attend one carnival this year, you best make sure Newport Main is the one!
“Last year we said there will not be one this big again… however, we can certainly try!
“We suggest you arrive by 18:30 and find somewhere along the route to watch this procession.
“We anticipate that the carnival will prove popular so finding a good vantage point is wise.”
“South Street and High Street are genuinely popular, however, further out along Trafalgar Road and the Mall can be a little quieter.”
Newport, of course, is not the Island’s only carnival. There will also be carnivals held at Sandown, Shanklin, Ventnor, Ryde and St Helens.
Carnival dates for 2023 have been listed below. However, organisers warn those wishing to attend to check the event advertised is taking place prior to the procession.

Just to let you know, the information for Sandown Childrens Carnival is incorrect.
It’s assembles from 10.15am at Sandown Pier and moves off at 11am.
They obviously haven’t looked at the weather forecast, heavy rain and 40 knot winds forecast!
