Isle of Wight residents are being invited to a free screening of a film which engages its audience in an informed debate around patient and public involvement in health research.
The powerful and educational film called ‘People are Messy’ is heading to Sandown Library to give an exclusive screening for local residents on Saturday (6th May) from 11:00.
The film screening offers the chance for Island residents to learn how to get involved with health research and help shape its future. The screening is a great opportunity for young people like school, college and university students who are looking for extracurricular enrichment activities and ways to enhance their personal statement or CV. Certificates of attendance will be provided to all attendees so they can be included in future career, college or UCAS applications.
It is hoped that the 60-minute film will inspire young people to get involved in health research and make a difference to the ways in which health services are delivered.
The film screening is being organised by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) and the Wessex Public Involvement Network (PIN) partnership, which aims to promote the involvement of patients and the public in health research.
Claire Ballinger, one of the event organisers and the Strategic Lead of the Wessex PIN hopes Islanders will enjoy the film and learning about how they can support health research:
“Involving patients and members of the public in research is so important because it means that research is more reliable, meaningful and better able to meet the needs of patients. The People are Messy film follows the story of two 18-year-olds with a rare blood disease and their consultant whose research has been turned down for funding because of a lack of patient and public involvement. We hope to show how involvement in health research can support the development of new treatments, improve the NHS and save lives.”
People are Messy will be shown as part of Hullabaloo, a free pilot community event being organised by Shademakers UK, one of Europe’s leading carnival groups. The arts based event which will promote health, wellbeing and a sense of community, is being held at Sandown Bay on 6th May, from 10:00-22:00.
