The Isle of Wight Council has been given over £1million to help support around 5,000 hard-up Islanders by reducing their council tax bill for 2020-21.
As part of its response to COVID-19, the Government has allocated a total of £1,135,756 to the local authority to support economically vulnerable people and households across the Island. This is known as the Hardship Fund.
A reduction of £150 is being made available to working age people receiving Local Council Tax Support. People in receipt of Local Council Tax Support schemes are recognised as the most vulnerable to changes in income and the government is committed to ensuring they have the support they need.
If you’re eligible for the 2020/2021 council tax reduction, you should get a new council tax bill in the coming weeks.
An Isle of Wight Council spokesperson said:
“These monies are only available to Local Council Tax Support claimants of working age. No action is required by the individuals concerned as this will automatically be fed into their council tax account and a revised bill will be sent out.
“Additional technical information is awaited from the government, and the details on the council’s website are being updated accordingly.
“Updated council tax bills will be sent out soon, which will include the discount.”
The Government says that council tax reductions should be applied as soon as possible from the beginning of the 2020-21 financial year and billing authorities should rebill council taxpayers as quickly as practical.
How does it work?
- You don’t need to do anything to get it, and it’s paid whether or not you have suffered personal difficulties because of the coronavirus.
- It’s being paid by the council as part of a national scheme announced on 24th March.
- It applies to people of working age (not pensioners) who receive council tax support.
- If your current council tax bill for 2020-21 is less than £150, then the new scheme means you won’t have to pay anything. Any payment you have made already will be refunded (as long as you have no arrears).
- If your bill is more than £150, then your monthly payments will reduce to reflect the new discount.

More for the breeding state kept low life then. Will buy an ounce or so of dope I guess.
Surely would have been kinder to give to the elderly, as those of younger years, could find work, or cut back on wasting cash on tat, whereas the elderly have no choice, too old to work, or sell drugs, or swindle their council tax by pretending to live alone, as many do along with working whilst claiming CV payments from regular employment with builder mate, roofer etc, can’t imagine grandad hobbling up a ladder to earn a little undeclared income to keep his UC.
Typical of handouts, mostly the wrong sort gain, those who are always a drain, and provide us with another delightful generation to do likewise only worse.
Yeah that’s it give them extra money a week and then lower there tax too!! Absolute joke!! No wonder no f*%#ker wants too work!!!
and why in reality would anyone want to work when theres a deadly invisible killer outside, don’t moan at the people who don’t wanna die, stop complaining and get a job at Tesco if you care so much !!!
Ssshhhh you haven’t a clue have you!! Take it you on the jam roll?……
What about everyone else who works and has now been laid off ?
I think you get the drift
Why does the unemployed people get all this help when this surely does not effect them financially as all there benefits are all still being paid. Or am I missing something. What about all of us who are working people and have had to go without any money as HMRC has set up until the end of April for all of us that are Furlough. Have still to pay mortgages, buy food pay rent and all of our own bills with no money coming in at all. Most people work are worse off it seems than unemployed and most of us are struggling. I am a buissiness owner but it does not mean we are rolling in money, completely the opposite. Maybe people that work hard a lot on low wages this will now make them think they would be better off sponging on the state. I relise many have health problems and would love to work, Theres lot could work but choose not to. These people are not stupid they know how to work the system.I wonder how many unemployed that could work have gone for jobs in this crisis or volunteered. Very few if any as its easier to sit back do nothing take the money.
Well said!!
And yet again the poor old self employed are screwed
Dont you just love it
The backbone of the island getting screwed over again
Perfect
Everyone’s hard up for money because the council put the council tax bill up every f*****g year but the wages dont reflect the increases.
So if you do absolutely nothing you automatically get more free money.
Yet if you’ve now been furloughed and lost 80% of your income you get nothing.
Classic blind IWC virtue accounting.
Lost 20%
So as a key worker, going to work each day risking my life and others I get nothing as usual. My partner due to being self employed will not get anything from government until June. No way I can pay my rent, council tax etc etc but hay ho let’s look after those that chose to sit on there arses not only though this hard situation but probably have been for years and know how to play the system, dnt get me wrong I feel for the people who generally need this help, but I think it should be for all as most essential workers need this help also at the moment
Very well said Rachel
Completely agree
well said
Hey let’s all go on the dole ..as far as I can see this the only way forward ..live on benefits and let the few work hard and pay for you ..what a joke this benifit system is .. oh my left toe hurts ..can t work ….Most of the people I know on benefits are better off ..can’t blame them really ..it’s fools work
We are all hardup as the council tax goes up above inflation and wages every year its wrong that we all pay a different price for the same service. Should be shared between all of us.
So, just to be clear on this…
Key workers who have to work and are therefore at an increased risk of getting COVI-19, get nothing.
Workers who have been furloughed (if they are lucky) get 80% of their normal pay, get nothing.
Those on benefits, who have already been given an extra payment each month at the beginning of this crisis, now benefit from a reduction in their Council Tax costs!
Please tell me where the logic and justice in in this!!
Never has been any logic or justice, it’s a fools game I wonder if the council will be more understanding when it doesnt get paid?
no justice mad iwcc
fu.k it lets all go on the dole
pissed off working hard and getting sod all for it
5000 x £150 = £750,000
so where is the rest of the 1.1 million going?
good point
What about nhs workers or construction workers having to work on with all this shit going on don’t think we will get help Fcuk them all
Little wonder poll tax is so high, if some were paying less than £150.00. Now they get a refund.
An insult to every one else, as most are struggling, but will never get help.
For people on benefits and pensioners nothing has changed financially because of the virus they’re still getting the same money! It’s the rest of us who have been laid off or are self employed that need the help and NOW . It’s same old story all the time and I’m sick of it !!!!
