Lauded songster Lyndan Morgans brings his deeply poetic music to Medina Bookshop in Cowes.
“Bejewelled lyrics of wit, woe & wonder” wrote Gavin Martin in the Daily Mirror, describing the songs of Lyndon Morgan the frontman of Songdog, and he’s not alone in his admiration. Esteemed names such as Robert Wyatt and Bruce Springsteen have also piled on the praise.
Having toured the world extensively, this month sees his 1st ever performance on the Isle of Wight, appearing at Medina Bookshop in Cowes on Thursday 26th September, Lyndon will be accompanied by fellow Songdog founder Karl ‘Pod’ Woodward on Mellotron and the wonderful violinist Bethan Frieze.
Medina bookshop is the perfect setting for this most literary of performers, who is as influenced by the writings of Kafka, Joyce, Proust, Beckett and TS Eliot, as he is by the music of The Beatles, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Scott Walker and David Bowie. For many years, he abandoned music to become a playwright, his stage play ‘Water Music’ won the prestigious Verity Bargate Award for Best New Play, his French monologue ‘Conte de Fées’ landed Radio France’s Meilleure Nouvelle (Francophone) prize, and his play ‘Jitterbug’ was workshopped at the National Theatre.
He’ll also be at home with Medina bookshop’s manager Paul Armfield, whose own music has likewise been described as ‘Folk Noir’, a genre reserved for very few other artists, but the perfect description of Songdog’s darkly melancholic, beautiful and poetic music; owing as much to the stylings of the French chansonniers as their English singing counterparts.
