Over 220 bikes, trikes and scooters of all varieties are travelling around the Isle of Wight this morning (Sunday) as part of Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance’s Ride4Life fundraising event.
Motorcycle enthusiasts gathered at the Isle of Wight Steam Railway in Havenstreet earlier on, each donating £10 per rider and £5 per pillion to take part in a ride out to Freshwater Bay and back.
The bikers set off at 10:00 and will be taking in views from the iconic Military Road before returning via Middle Road to Havenstreet later on today.
Stag Lane Motors have donated their time to follow behind the pack to assist anyone that may suffer a mechanical breakdown. Docklands Traffic Management (DTM) are also providing their services for free.
It’s the first time a Ride4Life event has been held on the Island and serves as a good opportunity for HIOWAA to raise awareness of their life-saving service amongst the biking community.
The charity’s CEO, Alex Lochrane, is a keen motorcyclist and has joined fundraisers on today’s outing.
Last year, 45% of incidents attended by HIOWAA were road traffic incidents. Motorcyclists make up just 1% of Britain’s total road traffic, but account for 19% of all road deaths.
It costs around £9,000 a day to keep the Air Ambulance flying. This year alone, the HIOWAA Critical Care Teams have attended over 500 missions.
