Becky and Peter Dobson, from Staffordshire, awoke this morning (Thursday) to find their specially adapted international road racing bikes missing from their campsite at Appuldurcombe.
The bikes – a Colnago CLD Team Edition and a Specialized Tarmac – are said to have been locked up with 4 bike locks, including motorbike locks, and a solid U lock. Sadly, these were cut off.
The Dobson’s believe that the thief or thieves used heavy duty cutting equipment to break through the specialist locks. Their children were sleeping just metres away.
Peter has told Island Echo:
“We have raced bikes in several countries – one of our daughters (9) completed Alpe d’Huez 21 hairpins recently and my wife raced in multi-day female road races.
“This crime not only impacts financially but also drives a lot of insecurity and fear into all the people we are talking with. If such targeted crimes are occurring where we felt safe, then it’s all the more unsettling”.
The Colnago CLD Team Edition is described as being white and silver in colour, with white bar tape and Mavic Kysirium wheels. The Specialized Tarmac is black/dark grey in colour with Fulcrum wheels.
It was only last month that Island Echo reported of a spike in bicycle thefts from campsites on the Isle of Wight. Between 23rd June and 10th July, a total of 7 reports were received by Police of thefts from different campsite locations.
It’s thought that bikes were stolen from Thorness Holiday Park near Cowes last night also.
