For the past few years, Paul Davies from Surrey has been visiting Sandown and taking the idea of a ‘bucket and spade holiday’ to a new extreme – by creating amazing artwork in the sand.
Affectionately known as ‘Sandman’, Paul travels to the Isle of Wight every April for a dance weekend at the Trouville Hotel. Whilst he is here he takes the opportunity to create abstract art for all to enjoy.
Speaking about his creative efforts, Paul says:
“One year I decided to make a pattern in the sand on a rather large scale using a piece of wood that I had cut notches out of. Since then things have grown and I have used a rake, a long piece of string and a couple of bamboo sticks.
“As each year goes by, my fellow dancers have grown to look forward to what I might do next. I enjoy doing it and I think the locals enjoy what I do too.
“I tend to get more ambitious with my designs, always aware of the tide coming in. Now I have earnt myself the nickname ‘Sandman’.
“It’s all just for a bit of fun but it’s amazing what can be done with a piece of string, two sticks and a rake. Unfortunately, the sand was dry in the middle of the design this year so it’s a little faint”.
