Thousands of Islanders have signed back up to the successful garden waste scheme operated by the Isle of Wight Council.
Just over 7,000 households have joined up to the scheme this year meaning that the service has reached the maximum capacity for the 2019/20 subscription year. However, existing subscribers may request a second or third subscription if the property has already signed up for the service.
Head of waste services, Natasha Dix, said:
“We are extremely pleased that the garden waste service has proved so valuable popular and welcome in its first year to users, in taking the hassle out of taking it to the tip and reducing the cost of travel to residents. We aim to extend the service to more households in the future.”
If you just missed your chance to register on the scheme, you can still sign up to be contacted when there is new availability or when subscriptions open for next year (2020/21). Email: [email protected] and ask to be added to the waiting list.
Natasha said:
“We are continually looking at ways in which we, as a council service, can become more sustainable so this project was a key part of our plans – making sure more waste was diverted from landfill and improving composting rates. As all garden waste collected is composted locally here on the Island and contributes to our national recycling targets, I would also like to thank residents for helping us to achieve this together.”
The optional fortnightly scheme launched last year and collects garden waste from the kerbside at total cost of £60 per year, working out at just over £1 a week.

Do this council think we are a stupid as them? Only open the tip in working hours then get people to sign up to pay to get garden waste collected!! i can only go to the tip at weekends now and its always rammed full of people in the same position.
Well worth signing up to, joined at the start and haven’t been to the tip with garden waste since. Have a large garden, so used to have to tip every other week, now it’s collected for less than the fuel cost for the car. Simples !!
Why didn’t they collect our in Newport this Friday? We pay for it but they haven’t collected!
It is disgusting that the council are asking us to pay for this service. It is free where I came from on the mainland and it was collected every 2 weeks!!!! SHAME ON YOU IOW COUNCIL MORE SCHEMES TO GET MONEY OFF THE ELDERLY AND PEOPLE WHO CAN’T GET TO THE TIP !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Basically it’s a service for the unemployed on housing, so they don’t have to take there green waste to the tip, not that they bother looking after there gardens!
So, by my maths, 7000 residents paying £60 a year is £420,000 a year for the Isle of Wight Council coffers
They also receive monies when people buy the compost created from all garden waste, whether collected, or taken, to the household recycling sites.
Who says there’s no money in recycling?
This ‘option’ should automatically be available FREE and part of the waste collection service anyway.
So, come on IOW Council, will you now leap into the 21st Century, and say yes to collecting garden waste free for those people that need it!
Now that would be a headline!!
