How the new floating bridge will look

The build of the brand new £3.2million Cowes Floating Bridge – also known as the chain ferry – is progressing well, as documented in a time lapse video released by the shipbuilding company.

Mainstay Marine in Wales has been tasked with building the floating bridge of the future to replace the existing vessel which has served East Cowes – West Cowes for over 40 years.

The new chain ferry, which is due for delivery during winter 2016/17, will ensure future connectivity across the River Medina for at least the next 25 years, and forms part of the wider Solent Gateways project. The 37m long vessel will have 4 lanes for vehicles with additional space for the stowage of motorbikes, scooters and bicycles.
