The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service are reminding members of the public about the appropriate action to take when coming across a casualty in a road traffic collision or other situation.
On Monday crews from Newport were called to Merstone Lane near Arreton following reports of a vehicle having rolled over. However, when firefighters arrived on scene they discovered the vehicle was back down on all 4 wheels, as previously reported by Island Echo.
It has since emerged that passing members of the public stopped, got out and pushed the Ford Fusion over with the causalities still inside the vehicle.
Although the fire service say they would never discourage members of the community from assisting in emergencies, they are reminding Islanders that sometimes more harm can be done by righting a vehicle, particularly if neck or spinal injuries are suspected.
If the casualty is conscious and communicating then reassurance is often the best action until emergency services arrive.
