Finley Manser-Grundy travelled to Southampton for Round 5 of the Wessex League CX Series on Sunday to race in the U8s age category.
This was Finley’s 2nd cycle cross race, so he had more of an understanding of the pace and style of racing. The course had some bigger climbs on it compared to the previous race, which suited Finn’s skills and style.
Finley started 2nd row on the grid, so knew he would have to look for overtaking opportunities to get towards the front of the race. From the start, he worked his way through the field, using the climbs and descent to overtake riders.
Finley’s background within mountain biking helped him attack the corners and descents with confidence. By the half way mark, he had pulled a gap on 4th place and was chasing the top two riders.
Finley kept a good consistent pace to finish 3rd out of 27 riders.
After the race, Finley’s father Jack, said
“It was a great surprise for Finn to make the podium, but it’s really positive for the future as he has 2 more years in this age category”
Well in Fin! Doing the island proud
