The second Isle of Wight Festival of Running, a unique event designed to support the charity that runs West Wight Sports & Community Centre in Freshwater, will be taking place between 1st-3rd June 2018.
The Festival of Running, sponsored by Visit Isle of Wight, is a 3-day event with a race for everyone. All the races take in the beautiful and spectacular West Wight scenery with the Needles Half and Needles Full marathons both taking a route which captures views overlooking The Needles and runs up to the famous Tennyson Monument.
There’s also the Farringford 5k – a Cross Country course taking a route around the home of poet Alfred Lord Tennyson, who lived at Farringford House. The Tapnell 10K goes through Tapnell Farm, an ideal spectator point with plenty for the family to do whilst waiting for the runners to arrive. The race programme includes a Children’s Fun Run in the safe surrounds of the playing field adjoining the Centre.
And if running isn’t enough the weekend kicks off with the Spyvelo Long Weekend – a 3-day event incorporating a 1.9km sea swim, 90km cycle and finishing up on the Sunday with the Needles Half Marathon.
As a charity event, organisers are appealing for help with marshalling throughout the weekend.
Clare Griffin, Centre Manager has said:
“We’re excited to be hosting the 2nd Isle of Wight Festival of Running next month. The Festival is an important fund raiser for our charity allowing us to continue to provide services that support peoples mental and physical health and well-being. But it’s also a great opportunity to enjoy some fantastic running in the beautiful West Wight.
“All the iconic West Wight scenery which so often is used to showcase the Isle of Wight is captured in one or other of our races. From children and novice runners to experienced runners there’s something for everyone!
“We’re also appealing to our community to come out and help us over the weekend – we need around 100 volunteers. If anyone can help, please do get in touch”
Competitors can benefit from discounted ferry travel on either Wightlink or Red Funnel and Southern Vectis are also offering discounted bus travel to the venue. With camping available on site throughout the weekend it’s an ideal opportunity for an active family break.
