Special hardship payments totalling £752,000 have now been allocated to help the 5,020 Island households who are currently in receipt of Local Council Tax Support (LCTS) for those of working age.
The payments are from a fund of £1.1million provided to the Isle of Wight Council by the government as part of its coronavirus package of support.
The support takes the form of £150 per LCTS claimant and has been allocated directly onto council tax accounts, with a revised statement issued to recipients to reflect the change.
The remainder of the £1.1million will be set aside for new LCTS claimants and extreme hardship cases.
Council leader, Councillor Dave Stewart, said:
“This extra support for Island households is crucial in these very difficult times, and I am pleased that we have been able to allocate it swiftly to claimants’ accounts and to use it for new claimants and those in particular difficulty.”

I know I’m going to “cop some flak” about this but…
Workers furloughed – Max 80% pay, TAXABLE – still got all utility bills, food and full Council Tax to pay..
On benefits – Extra £1000 for a year (£83 plus per month), now extra Council Tax relief!!
Sorry, but there is something SERIOUSLY wrong here!
Very wrong indeed. The working person on a wage that’s just over the cut off for any benefit help gets fek all, but once deductions are made ends up with less than a low income earner (not their fault, crap wages on the island) but because its worked out on gross wage not net wage is deemed ‘richer’ has to pay for it all.
They are preparing to remove the middle class.
Where’s the other £400000 Gone then back pocket?
Like many other large amounts of government money left in the care of this council to distribute among its lowly electorate. It’s given to them but they don’t have to account for a penny of so most is diverted into other pots. I would like to see the paper trail for the very large sums, like the pfe for our roads, WHY are surfaces crumbling within a few years when they promised us 25+ years of perfect road surfaces, the council taking huge amounts out it and employing someone to make savings means sub standard materials and a cheaper quicker job done. Ferry prices etc, several vested interests, used to be a conflict of interest years ago but seems ok now, the list goes on, corrupt to the core.
yes i agree i have paid my council tax for ever and now i have been of work for 6/7 weeks i dont get any council tax help ????
yes same here no help what so ever but you get nothing for free so all this money getting chucked about with grants and so on will have to be paid back so us that have never had any help or hand outs will still have to pay it back through taxes so loose loose for us
and after iv seen the true colours from our so called council and mp’s i will never ever do anything to help them again they are lower than the bottom of a bin
