Motorists are being reminded not to use the pedestrianised area of Ryde High Street for parking, or as a rat run, during the coronavirus crisis.
Police say they are growing increasingly concerned for the safety of pedestrians as a large number of vehicles are using the section of High Street between Garfield Road and Star Street.
Whilst the Isle of Wight Council have relaxed parking charges and restrictions across the Island, the Road Traffic Act still applies in full. This means you cannot drive on the High Street unless you are covered by an exemption.
Ryde High Street is a pedestrianised zone with restricted access as per the road signs. The only persons driving on Ryde High Street should be delivery drivers (Monday-Saturday 08:00-18:00) and disabled permit holders (Monday-Saturday 09:00-10:00). Outside of these times there is no restriction.
Inspector Matt Moss of Hampshire Constabulary has said:
“Whilst footfall in the pedestrian area is light by usual standards, I am concerned that there could be an accident, particularly as and when the government start to loosen restrictions and pedestrian traffic increases.
“We are very keen to rely on working with the public to improve the compliance with the restrictions, so will be looking to educate rather than ticket or take more formal action”.
Used to be a nation of shopkeepers, now a nation of delivery drivers. They might want to remind people not to fire through there after 6pm with cars parked on either side. Equally dangerous.
If motorists are driving up the high street out of hours, why aren’t they being prosecuted?
I’ve seen loads just this morning! Are cleaning companies aloud? Cause I’ve seen them leaning on each others vans and just sat there chatting! God knows where their cleaning cause everywhere is closed down!
Society is starting to ignore laws and rules, the prelude to a breakdown of our society or just chancers knowing the police are on the beaches.
Completely agree, wont be long until closed shops start getting robbed.
I’m still very confused over these mixed restrictions. Does this mean that disabled permit holders are allowed between 09:00 and 10:00, and that is the only time they are allowed, or is that the time they are not allowed? Or does it mean delivery drivers are allowed to deliver between 08:00 and 18:00 but not between 09:00 and 10:00?
It’s the phrase “outside these times” that causes confusion: which hours??
Need to read the sign, likely says disabled badge holder’s only, 0800 to 2200. That means only blue badges between those times, ONLY, being the key word. Outside those hours, everyone including blue badges is ok. Clearly there are other restrictions. Loading means loading only, and usually in a bay, continuously, complete paperwork and leave. Not have cuppa and a chat.

It amazes me how nobody seems to realize a round sign which is a white circle with red ring around it means? It actually means … NO VEHICULAR ACCESS…. other than those posted . in this case Disabled drivers 09:00 (am) to 10:00 (am)… Sadly allowing one hour.. ridiculous
Delivery vehicles 08:00 am until 18:00 pm.. ( 6 pm )
NO OTHER VEHICLES AT ANY TIME….WHICH INCLUDES NO PIZZA BIKES and NO TAXI’S
So how do all those cars get parked up there ??
How about the white car, parked there near Castle pub, facing the wrong way ??
Why are cars not stopped and fined on the spot for driving through and for parking. I have been standing in Queue for shops, seen a couple of police persons walking along, and cars driving up past them. Why do they turn a blind eye ?
Pedestrianized means no vehicles.
